    Appel d’offre pour la bourse doctorale mixte à l’Université Catholique de Bukavu / Université d’Anvers sur la protection sociale dans l’économie informelle (Septembre 2023 – août 2027)

    CONTEXTE

    L’Université Catholique de Bukavu (UCB) et l’Institut de Politiques du Développement (IOB) de l’Université d’Anvers sont partenaires dans un programme co-financé par l’Académie de recherche et d’enseignement supérieur (ARES) et son pendant néerlandophone, le VLIR-UOS.  Ce programme interuniversitaire vise à appuyer la coopération belge au développement (DGD) dans sa politique en matière de protection sociale, des inégalités et de croissance inclusive (y compris le travail décent) en particulier dans trois pays partenaires à savoir l’Ouganda, la République démocratique du Congo (RDC) et le Rwanda.

    Dans ce cadre, nous recrutons un (e) chercheur(e) pour entamer une recherche doctorale sur la protection sociale dans le contexte d’exploitation minière informelle en RDC.

     DESCRIPTION DES TACHES
    Si les modalités exactes du programme de recherche dans le PSP restent encore à spécifier, le/la chercheur (e) devra principalement :

    – Développer son thème de recherche en collaboration avec les autres membres du PSP, ainsi que les acteurs de la coopération belge au développement et les autres parties prenantes.
    – Participer à des conférences, colloques, ateliers, et réunions en RDC, en Belgique, et à dans d’autres pays en cas de besoin.
    – Rédiger des publications scientifiques ainsi que des textes destinés à une audience non-académique.
    – Effectuer un doctorat à l’Université d’Anvers (avec un séjour de maximum 24 mois en Belgique).

    Le/la chercheur (e) sera affilié (e) au Centre d’expertise en gestion minière (CEGEMI) et répondra aux exigences de celui-ci.

    PROFIL RECHERCHE

    – Avoir fini un cursus de premier et deuxième cycle dans les facultés de médecine/santé publique, d’économie, ou des sciences sociales, et ce avec une moyenne d’au moins 70% avec au moins une distinction durant son cursus.
    – Être titulaire d’un D.E.A. ou master dans une discipline pertinente (comme les études de développement, sciences économiques et/ou de gestion ; sciences politiques ; sciences sociales ; santé publique).
    – Être membre du personnel scientifique de l’École Régional de Santé Publique (ERSP), membre du CEGEMI, ou d’une autre faculté de l’Université catholique de Bukavu (UCB).
    – Avoir une expérience, en matière de recherche sur l’exploitation minière artisanale et/ou l’économie informelle et/ou la protection sociale, attestée par soit des publications scientifiques, des rapports ou des présentations scientifiques.
    – Avoir une bonne maîtrise de l’Anglais attesté soit par les résultats du TOEFL, du test de l’École de Langue de l’UCB, d’une formation en master en anglais, ou des publications.
    – Disposer d’excellentes capacités de communication à l’oral et à l’écrit, en français comme en anglais.
    – Être disposé (e) à travailler en équipe dans un contexte régional et multiculturel.
    – Disposer d’excellentes capacités d’écoute, d’analyse critique et de conseil.
    – Savoir organiser son travail, être autonome, flexible et proactif.
    – Nous encourageons les femmes et les personnes issues d’un groupe minoritaire à postuler.

    Bukavu Agribusiness Incubation Center (BAIC) awarded six groups of students and graduates for their innovative entrepreneurship ideas in agribusiness during a prize-giving ceremony held at Bugabo Campus on Saturday, 9th September 2023.

    BAIC is a hub established at Université Catholique de Bukavu (UCB) in 2018 with the support of the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM). It enables students’ technical and managerial capabilities in the field of entrepreneurship to be strengthened, guides students in the development and implementation of innovative agribusiness initiatives, and facilitates the link between student entrepreneurs, the public and private sectors. It also fosters a strong bond between students and financial providers.

    Through the hub’s first two cohorts, 250 students/graduates were trained in entrepreneurship, business plan development and market analysis, and 10 student/graduate businesses have been launched. This has resulted in the creation of 124 jobs and contributes to the reduction of youth unemployment while also triggering socioeconomic development.

    The third cohort was composed of 100 students/graduates from which the 6 most innovative businesses were recently supported. Originally intended to support and mentor students from three local institutions (Université Catholique de Bukavu, Université Evangelique en Afrique, Institut Supérieur de Dévelopement Rural) in South Kivu, BAIC is now attracting candidates from a wide range of universities and provinces throughout the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

    BAIC is thus actively involved in proposal writing in order to diversify its funding sources and mobilize more funds to allow other groups of students to launch their start-up. BAIC is also considering expanding the number of institutions that benefit from the hub’s activities, as well as the number of funding topics, in order to provide opportunities to a broader range of students/graduates in the Eastern Congo.

    BAIC’s 5-year experience confirms that the “seed money” approach works and can spark or stimulate the entrepreneurial spirit in young people. The BAIC framework also promotes mutually beneficial connections between the university, industry, and the community. It is a platform where experience and testimonies are constantly shared between students/graduates, increasing youth interest in entrepreneurship and job creation.

    BAIC is proud to have helped student businesses to be independent or receive larger grants from local public and private organizations. BAIC is grateful for RUFORUM’s assistance and welcomes future collaboration.

    The Vice-chancellor of the Catholic University has appointed Professor MAGADJU MUHINDO Pacifique, Professor MASIMANGO IMANI Mannix and Professor MUVUNDJA AMISI Fabrice as the new Deans of the Faculty of Law, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dean of the Faculty of Sciences respectively.

    Professor MAGADJU MUHINDO Pacifique replaces Professor BAHATO BAHAL’OKWIBUYE Christian who served as Dean of Faculty for a 4-year term at the Faculty of Law. Professor MASIMANGO IMANI Mannix replaces Professor CIKOMOLA CIRHUZA Justin who served as Dean of Faculty for a 4-year term at the Faculty of Medicine. As for Professor MUVUNDJA AMISI Fabrice, he will be serving his second term as the Dean of Faculty.

    Each Dean was elected by the Council of their Faculty on July 28, 2023.

    We wish them a successful term.

    Professor BISIMWA BALALUKA Ghislain was invested as Rector by the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Bukavu, representing the Grand Chancellor of the Catholic University of Bukavu, Abbé Delphin BUKUNGUTA, during the investiture ceremony held this Saturday, June 24, 2023 at Bugabo Campus.

    Rector BISIMWA BALALUKA Ghislain replaces Professor KANIGULA MUBAGWA, who worked with devotion for four years as Rector. Rector BISIMWA BALALUKA Ghislain was elected by the UCB University Council on April 28, 2023. He brings a wealth of experience in management and research-teaching.

    In his speech, the Chancellor paid a warm tribute to the outgoing Rector for his many achievements during his four years at the head of UCB. At the same time, he congratulated the new Rector on his investiture as Rector, inviting him to continue the good work undertaken by his predecessor for the glowing UCB above the lakes and mountains.

    The Vice-Rector of UCB, Professor Aimé Heri-Kazi BISIMWA, while wishing the new Rector a fruitful term, praised the outgoing Rector, Professor KANIGULA MUBAGWA, for his contribution to the reputation of UCB through his dedication.

    Rector BISIMWA BALALUKA Ghislain, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine and a medical doctor by training, is a specialist in Nutrition and Health Systems.

    UCB wishes him a successful term of office.

    At the end of the election held on Friday, April 28, at Bugabo Campus, the representatives of the Academic, Scientific and Administrative Bodies unanimously elected 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬o𝐫 𝐁𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐌𝐖𝐀 𝐁𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐋𝐔𝐊𝐀 𝐆𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧 as the new head of the Catholic University of Bukavu.  He will replace at this position 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬o𝐫 𝐊𝐀𝐍𝐈𝐆𝐔𝐋𝐀 𝐌𝐔𝐁𝐀𝐆𝐖𝐀.

    Prof BISIMWA BALALUKA Ghislain is a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of UCB. He has been elected for a 4-year once renewable term.

    Two out of three patients confirmed in Bukavu were declared recovered and have been discharged from the treatment center for people with SARS-Cov-2, the virus causing COVID-19 on April 20, 2020. After an official consultation led by the Governor of the Province at the treatment center based in Bwindi, Doctor Guy Quesney MATESO MBALE wanted to reassure the population while recalling the good measures to be observed in order to protect against COVID-19. The Emergency Doctor at the General Provincial Referral Hospital of Bukavu (HPGRB) and an alumnus of the Catholic University of Bukavu (UCB) is the manager of this center since the confirmation of the two first cases of COVID-19 on 30 March, 2020 in South Kivu Province.

    In the fight carried out by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (290 cases already) against the COVID-19 pandemic, South Kivu Province responded from the start. A first technical notice which focused on the prevention and management of the disease in the province was conveyed by the Catholic University of Bukavu and the HPGRB to the provincial authorities. By examining the risks of the pandemic and its severe consequences on the Province, this notice proposed an approach that should spare the inhabitants in the case of the confirmation of the virus. A second notice was issued on 30 March, 2020, recommending the Governor of the Province to unite the various local expertise and to always insist on prevention with regard to logistical difficulties.

    Out of three cases that have been confirmed to date following tests carried out by the National Biomedical Research Institute (INRB) in Kinshasa, the Province is pleased to note two cases of recovery. Doctor Guy Quesney MATESO MBALE indicates that one was treated using the combination of azythromicine and chloroquine (National Protocol) and the other patient who did not present symptoms, although confirmed sick, has just received psychological support from the treatment team of clinical psychologists and was not subjected to any medication. This is why he insists that asymptomatic people (healthy carriers) whose immune systems are still effective can be a real danger for people with vulnerable health, such as the elderly and those with preexisting pathologies such as malnutrition, diabetes, high blood pressure, AIDS and who are likely to progress to serious complications that can lead to death. Regarding the third patient with COVID-19 and who is still being treated at Bwindi treatment center, the doctor in charge reassures that the progress very well as the results of the first check were negative and is awaiting the results of the second check to be declared cured. Prevention is the effective way to protect yourself and others, he concluded. He entreats the population to ensure the observance of barrier gestures (wash their hands frequently with soap and / or use a hydro alcoholic solution, stay at home and only go out for very essential activities, observe social distance of one meter, use disposable handkerchiefs and wear protective masks). Out of the 290 confirmed cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 25 died and 35 were declared healed. South Kivu province at this stage has not registered any case of death.

    Doctor Guy Quesney MATESO MBALE is the vice-president of the sub-commission the COVID-19 Riposte Management in South Kivu and is the coordinator of the COVID-19 treatment center located in Bwindi, Bukavu Town. He also coordinates HPGRB / UCB riposte team activities. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University of Bukavu in his class of 2008. At the General Provincial Reference Hospital of Bukavu, he plays the role of Chief Medical Staff Doctor and is responsible for Acute Medicine. By congratulating him for his prowess for the benefit of the Republic in this difficult time for the whole humanity, the Catholic University of Bukavu wishes to highlight the contribution of this worthy son of Bukavu as well as all his graduates who animate several sectors of national, regional and international life. May you shine from the top of lakes and mountains and serve the community adequately. This has been our commitment since the creation of the University.

    1. Contexte

    Cet appel intervient dans le cadre du projet “from handmade gravel to handmade urbanism”. Ce projet est organisé par le Centre d’Expertise en Gestion Minière (CEGEMI) de l’Université Catholique de Bukavu (UCB) avec l’Université d’Anvers (UAntwerpen) et l’Université Catholique de Leuven (KULeuven).

    Ce projet vise à étudier les impacts des constructions dans la ville de Bukavu. Cette évaluation se fera sur trois axes. Le premier axe sera l’humain. Il consistera à analyser la situation des travailleurs impliqués dans l’extraction, le transport et l’utilisation des matériaux de construction. Le deuxième axe sera la nature. Il consistera à analyser l’impact de l’extraction, du transport et de l’utilisation des matériaux de construction sur les écosystèmes aquatiques et terrestres avoisinant la ville de Bukavu. Le dernier axe sera le matériel. Il analysera l’état des constructions dans la ville de Bukavu et des perspectives d’améliorations eût égard au contexte du milieu.

    2. Procédure

    Les candidatures au doctorat suivront la procédure de sélection ci-dessous:

    1. Les candidatures peuvent être déposées du 15.02.2023 au 28.02.2023, à l’adresse suivante: cegemi@ucbukavu.ac.cd et après avoir complété les résultats de leur parcours académique dans ce tableau.
    2. La préselection se fera sur base des CV et performances académiques
    3. Les candidat(e)s présélectionnés déposeront un projet de recherche et le présenteront à une date qui sera communiquée ultérieurement.
    4. La présentation du projet sera suivie par une interview à une date qui sera communiquée ultérieurement.
    5. Le(la) candidat(e) sélectionné(e) provisoirement après les interviews aura l’obligation de disponibiliser tous les documents liés à son inscription en thèse (passeport, résultat TOEFL, diplômes originaux entre autres) avant le début de l’année académique 2023-2024 (1er octobre 2023). En cas d’incapacité à obtenir ces documents, le(la) candidat(e) provisoirement sélectionné(e) pourra être remplacé(e).

    Les candidatures en master seront évaluées à une date ultérieure (qui sera communiquée ultérieurement). Ils(elles) auront l’obligation de présenter tous les documents liés à leur inscription en maîtrise (passeport, résultat TOEFL ou équivalent, diplômes originaux entre autres) avant l’année académique 2024-2025.

    3. Eligibilité

    C.1. Candidat(e) au doctorat en étude de développement

    Pour le doctorat en étude de développement, le(la) candidat(e) doit répondre aux exigences suivantes:

    . Etre ancien de l’Université Catholique de Bukavu, consentant à une charge d’enseignement dans l’une de ses facultés, ou être déjà un enseignant dans l’une de celles-ci.
    . Avoir suivi un cursus des premier et deuxième cycles dans les facultés des sciences sociales, d’économie ou de droit, et ce avec une moyenne d’au moins 65% et une distinction.
    . Être détenteur d’un diplôme de maîtrise ou inscrit dans un programme de master qui se conclura au plus tard en Septembre 2023.
    . Avoir une bonne maîtrise de l’Anglais attesté soit par les résultats du TOEFL (les résultats de l’École de Langue de l’UCB sont provisoirement acceptés, en attendant les résultats formels au plus tard en Septembre 2023) ou une formation en Master en anglais avec succès.
    . Avoir conduit une recherche en lien avec les sciences de développement.

    A delegation composed of AGANZE MUSAFIRI Arnold, BAHARANYI BUSIME Guilaine and BIRUMBA NYEGEZI Daniel, three students and members of the Catholic community of Université Catholique de Bukavu met Pope Francis during his meeting with Congolese youth at the Nunciature on February 2, 2023.

    BUSIME BARAHANYI Guilaine, a student in the first year of her degree in the Department of Environmental Sciences, spoke on behalf of the youth of catholic universities of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

    On this occasion, the Congolese youth, through their peer from Université Catholique de Bukavu, asked the Holy Father to raise their voices so that special attention be given to the humanitarian chaos through which the East of the DR Congo is passing. They also raised the issue of human rights violations that plague the population throughout the country.

    The students praised Pope Francis message of hope by committing themselves to the cause of peace and reconciliation. They concluded their remarks by pleading for the restoration of peace while denouncing the silence of the international community.
    During his speech, Pope Francis called on young people to transform society. His Holiness emphasized the restoration of peace by asking the students to wear the hat of peacemakers in their respective communities.
    Serving the community is one of the three missions of the Catholic University of Bukavu that our students take to heart throughout their studies.

    Olivier SHUKURU and Patient MURHI, two students enrolled in the final year at the Faculty of Law of Université Catholique de Bukavu with a particular interest in issues related to sexual violence, have worked in pairs with two students from Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) on a North-South dialogue project.

    This project consists of an analysis of Congolese court decisions and aims to highlight the intercultural exchange. This collegial work is the fruit of a diversity of opinions reflected in the results of different student research. To facilitate the exchanges, the project favors face-to-face work by involving field actors. The UCL students visited Bukavu in September. A trip by UCB students to Belgium is planned in the coming days.

    The research and daily reports of the visits are posted on this blog which was created in the Rosa Parks law clinic of Université Catholique de Louvain.

    Our students motivated their interest in the issue by a bitter observation they made about the armed conflicts in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. For them, the armed conflicts being at the base of the repetitive wars have caused sexual violence, an issue that has become horrifying in view of the denomination of the world capital of rape.

    Driven by the desire to produce quality work on such a crucial issue, the students set out to update the issues of sexual violence depending on realities and contexts.

    During their field works with their UCL peers, under the guidance of Prof Trésor MAHESHE MUSOLE, SHUKURU and MURHI deplored the lack of interest and information on the issue of sexual violence. For them, this experience is a great opportunity because the issue of sexual violence alerts more than one person regardless of their background. It also allows them to go deeper into certain questions while creating a critical and collegial spirit.
