We exist since the first days of the Catholic University of Bukavu. The first program of the Faculty of Medicine started operating since the first years of the opening of the Catholic University of Bukavu. In its early days, this faculty functioned mainly with visiting professors from several other African and European countries. The first class of UCB doctors finished their studies in Benin due to the strong collaboration between the young University and its partners, because at that time UCB’s second level of medicine was not yet totally functional. The Faculty of Medicine has its main campus within the General Provincial Referral Hospital of Bukavu (HPGRB), in Stanislas Haumont Amphitheater named in memory of Professor Stanislas HAUMONT of the Catholic University of Louvain who strongly contributed to the creation and operation of this faculty at its inception. The Faculty of Medicine organizes seven classes ranging from the first year of bachelor (3 years) to the fourth year of medicine (4 years). The General Provincial Referral Hospital of Bukavu serves as a university clinic for the clinical attachments of the students of this faculty. It also welcomes trainee doctors (interns) for their clinical training in the last year of medicine. The Faculty of Medicine of UCB is offering a postgraduate of clinical specialization, mainly, in collaboration with the Catholic University of Louvain. It welcomes specializing doctors for one or two years of their specialization courses. It already has registered a thesis in Gastroenterology defended at the Catholic University of Louvain in 2016. Two other theses, one in Diabetology and another in Clinical Pharmacology, were defended in 2018, still at the Catholic University of Louvain. The Faculty of Medicine enjoys an undisputed reputation in physician training both in the DRC and in other countries. The third postgraduate program covers Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics (Specialization) and Public Health (Specialized Master).
