He represents not only the Democratic Republic of Congo, but also Africa alongside his colleague from South Africa. The Academy represents the diversity and excellence of physiology worldwide. It is composed of annually elected members, not exceeding 30. The members are physiologists who are distinguished in the field of physiology or professionals who have made outstanding contributions to physiological sciences. The criteria for the selection are based on significant original discovery, excellent and sustained contribution to research, or exceptionally on the profile of individuals who have in some other way rendered outstanding service to physiology. The role of Professor MUBAGWA and his peers in the Academy is to contribute to its development. Their advice focuses on strategies and approaches to achieve the vision of the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) which is to make physiology an indispensable discipline of modern medicine and public health, a scientific field of excellence and renown while attracting the best scientists from around the world for the benefit of the physiological community. IUPS is a non-political, non-geographic scientific organization representing over 60 physiological societies worldwide. In addition to the members, the Academy includes three honorary members who are Nobel Prize winners.
