The Regional Center for Interdisciplinary Studies Applied to Sustainable Development (Centre Régional d’Etudes Interdisciplinaires Appliquées au Développement durable) (CEREIAD) is one of the research centers operating within the Catholic University of Bukavu (UCB). With a regional vocation, CEREIAD brings together about twenty researchers established in the African Great Lakes region, namely Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Its mission is to contribute to the promotion of research on sustainable development in the Great Lakes region, to fight against soil and environmental degradation in general, to coordinate research activities in all key areas of rural development; to contribute to the restoration of soil fertility and capacity to increase their productivity and to improve food security of the populations of the entire region in general and of the DRC in particular. CEREIAD is active in several complementary areas, namely – Research and Development Capacity Building (R4D); – Technological innovations for community development; – Natural resource management and soil conservation against degradation – Socio-environmental impact studies; – Land tenure protection and security; – Socio-economic studies; – Food processing and conservation CEREIAD has conducted several studies for the benefit of national and international structures. We can name some below: – Baseline study on the agricultural potential in the savannah areas of Maniema for the GIZ Program for Biodiversity Maintenance and Sustainable Forest Management (2020-2021) – Study on natural resource management techniques for the Project on Protection of Girls and Children Working in Mines in Walungu, Kabare and Kalehe for Centre Olame, funded by Caritas Australia and the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD) (2022); – Baseline study for the project on Territorial Action for a Sustainable Development in Kivu (Action Territoriale pour un Développement Durable au Kivu) (ATEDD-KIVU) (2021). – Study on the harms of rivers in the coastal zone of the provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu for the ATEDD-Kivu project (2022). CEREIAD has also been involved in the development and implementation of several development projects in the provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu such as: – Project Action Territoriale pour un Développement Durable au Kivu (ATEDD-KIVU) in consortium with CADRE, FONDATION MATENDO, COOPERATIVE MUUNGANO and RIEH (French NGO); – Restructuring and support project for local development organizations financed by the FAO in consortium with ADBA-RDC.
