EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID When a case of illness or discomfort occurs to someone in the premises of the Catholic University of Bukavu, it is recommended that you react. Remember! Your quick and thoughtful action can save a life. In these specific moments, it is common that you panic, that you flee and that the worst happens. According to the law, you don’t have to act. To assist a person in danger does not require anyone to risk his own life by playing the “superhero”. But it is rather a human value to take small actions of bravery. This section serves as a guide for first aid concepts. These guidelines will help you to react thoughtfully and possibly save a life. The first thing to do in case of emergency situations requiring first aid is to call the following number (+243) 843 520 357. You will reach the Emergency Department of the Provincial General Referral Hospital of Bukavu. In this situation, do the following: – Describe the geographical area where you are if you do not know its name; – Briefly describe the situation you observe from the person (this can help emergency responders to better prepare their intervention) – Take an action by calling for help (shout loudly if necessary); – If you are a rescuer, evaluate the situation and try to take the saving action; – If you suspect an injury to the head or spine, support the head and neck of the victim; – Evaluate the victim’s ability to respond and try to find out more about his case; – Stay as long as possible until the ambulance arrives (with regard to the time that separates you from the Provincial Hospital, it is sure that the traffic allows rescuers to arrive, except in Kalambo where a medical center operates and can provide the first assistance). You can read the guidelines of the Provincial General Referral Hospital of Bukavu on emergency situations and if you wish, you can participate in the training of the rescuers it organizes. An Emergency Student Group also exists within the University.
