SOCIAL SERVICE The social service is a service that pays attention to student affairs at the University. This service brings together the head of social services, Mr. Toussaint BACISHOGA, as well as representatives of the students and the academic and scientific staff of the University. It has a wide field of investigation and deals with themes related to the living conditions of students and social policies of the University. The social service of the Catholic University of Bukavu operates in six (6) commissions, all chaired by Mr. Toussaint BACISHOGA. 1. The Student Accommodation Commission As stated, this commission manages the housing of students enrolled at the Catholic University of Bukavu. The University has two hostels for male students, one located in Kalambo and the other in Karhale, all near lecture halls. Each hostel is managed by a site manager in collaboration with the head of the social service of the University. Through the same service, the University provides accommodation to female students in the Olame Center, located a few meters from the Bugabo campus. This hostel is not directly under the direction of the social service of the University, but operates in collaboration with the Olame Center for the integration of new students. 2. The Social Scholarship Commission This commission is composed of eight (8) members, in addition to the head of the social service, assisted by an assistant, a counselor, a representative of the College of Students, a representative of the parents, an administrative representative, and a representative of the academic body and scientist. Social scholarships are offered to needy students who cannot cover their academic budgets due to insufficient means or income. They are awarded according to social criteria defined by the members of the commission during a meeting held each year, one month after the intake. The request for a scholarship is submitted from 15 October to 15 December. The application will then be examined by the members of the commission to be approved or rejected. 3. The Culture, Sport and Leisure Commission The Catholic University of Bukavu considers sports and cultural activities as a means of socialization, learning and integration. The Culture, Sport and Leisure Commission provides students and university staff with material and financial resources for the organization of sports and cultural activities. This commission coordinates, in collaboration with the college of students, the different sports and cultural events that take place within the University. 4. The Job Commission A job in the campus of his university or school is ideal when you are a student. The Catholic University of Bukavu offers small jobs to students wishing to work in its different campuses. As a student at the Catholic University of Bukavu, you can apply for different small jobs available to your status. You can be pilot student or protocol, you will be in charge of the reception and the integration of new students at the beginning of the academic year. You may also be invited to participate in conferences and open-days organized by the University. Another small job is offered at the University Library. You would provide guidance to library users. The Provincial General Referral Hospital of Bukavu, in collaboration with UCB, offers stretcher positions to students who wish, within the hospital. The advantage of all these small jobs is that you work in your own university. 5. Gender and Social Affairs Commission This commission has a dual mission. First, it deals with gender issues within the University. It deals with issues related to the University’s female students and staffs, as well as all gender-related activities such as the International Women’s Day, and many others. Second, this commission deals with social affairs within the University. It intervenes in case of a happy event (birth or marriage, allowances for retirees …) or unfortunate (mourning, accident …) that affects a student or a staff member of the University. 6. The Commission for Health of Staffs and Medical Orientations for Students This commission is still very new. The Catholic University of Bukavu provides health care to its academic and administrative staff by paying their subscriptions to the health insurance of the Provincial General Referral Hospital of Bukavu. As for students, the University is limited to guiding them (or their parents) in the choice of care or insurance. On the other hand, the Catholic University of Bukavu wants all the students living in the hostel of Kalambo to mandatorily be enrolled to the health insurance of the Provincial General Referral Hospital of Bukavu. And soon, this instruction will be applied to all students living in the University hostels.
